Hiking Trails

There's nothing quite like springtime in Virginia. With the trees budding and woodland wildflowers blooming, its one of our real estate agents' favorite times to hike and explore.

If you're looking for a great spring hike in the Richmond area, you have a lot of options. Dozens of outstanding hiking destinations are available right here in the city, and the surrounding region is crisscrossed by hundreds of miles of trails. These are some of our favorites.

  • Forest Hills Park Trail - 4001 Riverside Dr, Richmond, VA 23225
Spanning over 100 acres, Forest Hills Park is a phenomenal hiking resource in Richmond. It's easy to access from many Richmond homes for sale on the south side of the James River and includes a beautiful 2.7-mile loop trail that meanders through charming woodlands and wetlands. Forest Hills Park has multiple entrances and parking areas, but the Riverside Drive entrance is the best start and endpoint for this loop hike and is also just footsteps away from Reedy Creek and the network of trails along the James River.

  • Pony Pasture Trails (James River Park) - 7300 Riverside Dr, Richmond, VA 23225
James River Park is an extensive network of interconnected parks and trails along the James River in Richmond. It includes more than a dozen great hiking trails that offer top-notch scenery convenient to various parts of the city. The Pony Pasture Trails are an excellent option at the western end of the park system. This 2.1-mile loop winds through meadows, woods, wetlands, and right alongside the river itself, making it a popular destination for hiking, mountain biking, and birding. Connections are available to numerous spurs and side trails as well.

  • Buttermilk Trail - 22nd St Parking lot, Richmond, VA 23225
Another excellent part of the James River Park trail system, the Buttermilk Trail is a 5.3-mile out-and-back hike that stretches through wooded land on the south side of the river. Accessible from the 22nd Street parking lot just off Riverside Drive, this trail also passes right by the trailhead to the aforementioned Forest Hills Park loop. It's a moderately challenging trail through hilly, wooded terrain. One can also continue hiking eastward to access the Belle Isle Trails, which are especially popular for mountain biking and provide great views of the river and downtown skyline.

  • Larus Park Trails - 300 Hayden Hill Ln, Richmond, VA 23235
Bordered by Huguenot Road and the Chippenham Parkway, Larus Park is a hidden gem on the southwest side of Richmond. The park is woodsy and secluded, with a meandering trail system that twists and turns over hills and streams. The 2.5-mile Larus Park Loop is best accessed from the south trailhead on Huguenot Road. You'll also see various spur trails along the way, with color-coded blazes to keep you on track.

  • Appomattox River Trail - 21616 Chesterfield Ave, Petersburg, VA 23803
Less than 20 minutes south of Richmond, the Appomattox River Trail is an underrated hiking destination in Petersburg. The construction of this extensive greenway system alongside its namesake river is still a work in progress, but numerous sections totaling many miles have already been completed. The 5-mile point-to-point hike from Merchants Mill Dam (near the Battersea Foundation) to the abutment dam at John J. Radcliffe Conservation Area is a beautiful riverside hike near these Petersburg homes for sale. The trail also provides great fishing access on the river.
